Notes from the UK – Part 2
This has been the second week in the UK and it was spent mostly in Scotland. It’s a stunning place with gorgeous vistas, especially in the Highlands!
Will share some reflections once I’m back!
And now, on to the newsletter.

Lovely reframing.

Writing is thinking… And laziness from the writer costs the reader.

Notes from the UK – Part 2
The UK is a remarkable country with several striking features. But I wanted to share two very random (but cool) observations from our trip… both to do with my field of storytelling.
You’ll come across good communication examples in the most unlikely of places in the UK. Here are two examples:
- Sharing a comic-style story for ensuring safety in railway stations
How do you communicate to train commuters that they should avoid rushing to catch the train?
You could write a long list of bullet points, or put up a list of dos and don’ts.
But, at Barking station (in the East of London), TfL (Transport for London) did something different. Something cool. They created a set of comic-strip stories!

I know, I know. No busy commuter is going to wait and read these on their way to the train… But some of them will (like me!). And I just loved the idea…
- Keeping people updated with clear communication
Whenever public works are undertaken, what does the construction contractor do? Mostly, cordon off that part and put a set of dividing boards there. Or put up a “Work in progress, inconvenience is regretted” sign.
In the UK, at two venues, I came across clear, customer-friendly signs that explained what works were happening, why and what was the way ahead.
Here’s one from the Tower of London:

And this one is from the Edinburgh Castle:

It’s sure nice to be told in clear terms what work is happening and why… A good lesson for all public works departments across the world to learn from.
That’s all from this week’s edition.
